Army CPT Daniel W. Eggers

KIA May 29, 2004
Operation Enduring Freedom

Assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

CPT Daniel Eggers, a Special Forces Green Beret, was killed May 29, 2004 when his combat vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) during combat operations in Kandahar, Afghanistan; two other Soldiers were also killed in the attack. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; two young sons, John and William; parents, William and Margaret; and six siblings, Anne Marie, Stephen, Maris, Mary Jeanne, Rose Mary, and William.

From an early age, Danny’s father, William, knew he was destined for Army life and he told his friends he was going to be a Green Beret. As a teenager, Danny was thought to be a whip-smart, tough, kind, had a quirky sense of humor that would put other at ease, and would just light up a room when he walked in. Daniel’s friend Bill stated he showed signs of how physically and morally courageous he was in high school when he called out a teacher for inappropriately leering at girls, rappelled off the back of the high school football stadium, and was even more evident when he stood up against and reported the hazing of female cadets during the Citadel’s first year of gender integration.

Daniel came from a military family, and his father served in Vietnam and was a lieutenant on the Milford, N.H. police force. Donovan, his grandfather, laid under-ocean cables from Greenland to Puerto Rico during World War II, and his uncle was a guard for General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II. His great grandfather was also a part of Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War.

In 2005, the Kabul Compound in Afghanistan was renamed “Camp Eggers” in honor of the former Green Beret and later closed in 2014 as a part of U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Camp Eggers plaque now resides next to a new plaque in the Eggers Army ROTC Classroom at The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina in which he graduated from.

CPT Daniel W. Eggers was 28 years old from Cape Coral, FL.

Original portrait was presented February 11, 2016 to his family at a special memorial event hosted by Leesar in Fort Myers, FL.
