Army SFC Benjamin B. Wise

KIA January 15, 2012
Operation Enduring Freedom

Assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington

Army SFC Benjamin Wise died January 15, 2012 at
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, of injuries sustained January 9 when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire in Balkh province, Afghanistan. SFC Wise was on his fourth deployment overseas when he was injured by the insurgent attack.

Benjamin graduated from West Side Christian High School in 1995 and entered the Army in November 2000 as an infantryman. In 2005, SFC Wise volunteered for the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course and was selected to continue training as a medical sergeant in the Special Forces Qualification Course. After graduating in 2008, he was deployed once to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan.

The war in Afghanistan has claimed the lives of two sons of Arkansas couple, Dr. Jean and Mary Wise, who also has a third son, Beau, serving in the Marines. Benjamin’s brother, Jeremy, was killed in a terrorist attack on a CIA outpost in Afghanistan in December 2009. In a September 2004 interview with the Hope Star, Benjamin said he was proud to be a soldier. “It’s a job,” he quipped. “Yes, there are a lot of frustrating things about being over there, about being with people from another culture and the special circumstances. But, at the end of the day, it’s a job; and we’re specialists in the field. The troops are sent there to accomplish a mission. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for awhile now,” he said. “I was in college and I thought I’d do it now while I was relatively young. I wanted to serve my country and do something that I found exciting.”

The Army Ranger is survived by his wife, Tracy; their two sons, Luke and Ryan; and a daughter, Kailen. Benjamin’s family described him as a loving husband, devoted father, caring son and selfless soldier. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Medal.

SFC Benjamin Wise was 34 years old from Little Rock, Arkansas
