KIA February 19, 2005
Operation Iraqi Freedom

Assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington

SPC Clint Gertson died February 19, 2005 from injuries sustained from enemy sniper fire while on combat patrol in Mosul, Iraq. He is survived by his parents, Gayle and Susan, brother, Matt and sister, Cori.

Clint was an All-American boy who loved to fish, hunt, run cattle and farm rice with his father on the family rice farm. Louis was named Football Lineman of the Year and was voted Most Spirited by his senior class at Rice High School, Class of 1998. After graduation he attended Wharton County Junior College and McMurray University in Abilene. He is remembered by his countless friends for his warm and ever-present smile, his easygoing nature, and his zest for life, and his thoughtfulness and concern for others touched man hearts.

He enlisted in January 2003 and completed his original two-year enlistment obligation in January. Although he could have returned home and had survived the mess hall suicide bombing at Base Marez just two months earlier where he took shrapnel to his back and 22 service members lost their lives; he re-enlisted to stay and be a sniper. He was a 6-foot-4 Texan who was known in his unit as “Big Country”. His father Gayle said, “What really got him was seeing the kids there. They were on patrol one time and say that a boy’s bicycle had broken down. Clint stopped to help fix it.”

Clint was optimistic about the situation in Iraq, especially since the elections in Iraq coincided with his birthday. Clint had been in Iraq since October 2004, and his brother Matt had also served a tour in Iraq. According to his father, Clint said in his letter home, “If something does happen to me, don’t worry about me and don’t worry about us. There are a lot more people like me that will pick up the slack.”

SPC Clint Gertson was 26 years old from Eagle Lake, Texas.

Original portrait was presented in September 2007 to his parents at their home in Eagle Lake, Texas.
