KIA June 9, 2008
Operation Iraqi Freedom

Assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Lewis, Washington

Specialist Thomas Franklin Duncan III died June 9, 2008 as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during combat operations in Sinjar, Iraq.

Thomas, mostly referred to as “Tommy”, was born April 13, 1987 at Fort Hood, Texas. After graduating from high school in Rowlett, he enlisted in the military in February 2006. Tommy completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Ga., as an Army infantryman; and after graduating from the Basic Airborne Course there, he was assigned to the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) in August 2006. One month later, SPC Duncan was assigned for to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. There he served as an assistant machine gunner, M240B machine gunner, and as a grenadier. Ranger Duncan distinguished himself as a member of the Army’s premier light infantry unit, traveled to all corners of the world in support of the Global War on Terrorism, and fought valiantly to “uphold the prestige, honor, and high ‘esprit de corps’” of the Ranger Regiment.

On an Internet memorial page for Tommy, his grandfather, Thomas Duncan Sr., wrote, “Tommy, you were my first grandson. I love you so much and I am so proud of you and all those that gave their lives so we as Americans can feel safe and free. All of you young men and women are my heroes.” Another entry written by Michael Villa, states, “To his family: I went to RIP with Duncan to become a Ranger. Strongest dude I know; completed a 5-mile run with a broken ankle and still passed. ‘This one is for the Airborne Ranger in the Sky’.”

SPC Duncan is survived by his father, Thomas F. Duncan III; mother and stepfather, Amanda and Charles Michel; wife, Megan; two sisters, Crystal and Elizabeth; and grandparents, Dorothy and CW3 Edward Berg.
