Army SSG Vincenzo Romeo

KIA May 6, 2007
Operation Iraqi Freedom

Assigned to 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment,  3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington

Staff Sgt. Vincenzo Romeo was killed in Baqubah, Iraq when an IED detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Also killed were SGT Jason Harkins, SGT Joel Lewis, CPL Matthew Alexander, CPL Anthony Bradshaw and CPL Michael Pursel.

Vincenzo, known as “Enzo” by his loved ones, was born in Calabria, Italy and moved to the United States in 1986 with his family. He graduated from Lodi High School, New Jersey in 2001 and attended Kean University for a year before he enlisted in the Army in March 2003.

After completing training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington as an infantry soldier. During his time in the Army, SSG Romeo took every opportunity to become the best version of himself, rising from an inexperienced Private to a seasoned Squad Leader that superiors, peers, and subordinates alike respected.

“Vincenzo was eager to learn and willing to perform any duty. I recognized early his ingenuity, his charm, and his gift of filling the room with laughter,” 1SG William Montgomery, Enzo’s Platoon Sergeant, said. “As a professional soldier, he was astonishing. As a person, he was always that person everyone wanted to be around.”

His family said Enzo was a kind and courageous person who brought joy and laughter to those around him. He had a talent for storytelling and impersonations, and always looked forward to gathering with family and friends. Upon returning from his second and final deployment to Iraq, he was planning to marry his fiancé, Amanda Anderson, and pursuing a career as a New Jersey State Trooper.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, Enzo was the son of Antonio and Saveria Romeo and brother to Bruno and Carmelo.

SSG Vincenzo Romeo was 23 years old from Lodi, New Jersey.

The original portrait was presented May 29th, 2019 to his mother, Saveria Romeo, brothers and family in Franklin Lakes, NJ during a special Memorial Day event made possible by Becton Dickinson and Company.
