Assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Torii Station, Okinawa, Japan

Army SSG Jeremie Border was killed September 1, 2012 of wounds caused by small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in the Afghanistan province of Ghazni. SSG Jonathan P. Schmidt was also killed in the same incident.

Jeremie graduated from Mesquite High School in 2002, being known as a standout football player and member of the 2001 state championship team which recorded a perfect 15-0 season. He continued his education at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas where he played college football for four years, was a member of the Servant Leadership program and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He graduated McMurry in 2006, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Communications.

Directly after graduating, Jeremie entered military service as an Army Infantryman where he completed basic training, advanced individual training and the basic airborne course at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 2008 he was selected during the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course as a SF Weapons Sergeant, and learned Indonesian at the Special Operations Forces Language Course at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Warfare Center and School. He was later assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1stSpecial Forces Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Jeremie’s military awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and many more. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

Jeremie is survived by his mother and step-father, Mary Border and Robert Harris, and sisters, DeLaynie, Katie, Ashley and Amanda.
