Marine LCpl Luke B. Holler

KIA November 2, 2006
Operation Iraqi Freedom

Assigned to the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, San Antonio, Texas

LCpl Luke Holler was killed November 2, 2006 while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq. LCpl Holler was hit by a roadside bomb while Soldiers were extracting his unit from a reconnaissance mission. LCpl Holler was the ninth Marine from San Antonio’s 4th Reconnaissance Battalion to die in Iraq since the March 20, 2003, invasion of the country.

Luke graduated from Bracken Christian School in 2003. He was always a happy-go-lucky kid, and very dedicated to whatever he set his mind to. Luke was passionate for life, family, friends, God and country. His mother, Ruth, said he had told her that he wanted to join the Marines because he wanted to join the ‘hardest’ branch of the military. “I need to do this—,” he had told his parents, “I want to serve my country. And if I’m going to do it, I want the toughest.” After high school, Luke attended San Antonio College and then worked in various jobs locally for a year before finally setting off for boot camp. Ruth said that Luke originally went away to training “with insecurities about himself, but when he came back, he was a man: secure in himself. He loved the Marines.” He graduated from boot camp on November 5, 2004.

An excerpt from a story written by Luke’s mother, Ruth Holler:

“I’ve been told that Luke was ‘beyond his years’. His battle buddies have told us that before a mission, Luke helped the guys relax through his humor and light heartedness. He made such a positive impression that made others look up to him. He was known as the go-to-guy for his buddies because he was so charming he could win over those who could provide needed equipment and supplies for his guys.”

LCpl Luke Holler was 21 years old from Bulverde, Texas.

Original portrait was presented October 9, 2012, to LCpl Holler’s family at a special event at the Church at Horseshoe Bay.
