Gary N. Young served as a Navy Corpsman and arrived in Vietnam on September 10, 1968. After working in the MAG-11 dispensary in Da Nang for several months he requested to be reassigned to fly medivac missions with a Marine Corps helicopter unit. In January 1969, he was transferred to Marble Mountain to fly with MAG-16. Shortly thereafter on February 7, 1969, while on a medivac mission in the Arizona Territory just south of Da Nang, his CH-46 helicopter, under the call sign “Purple Fox” was shot down. Six of the seven aboard were killed.
