Assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia

Sergeant Cameron Thomas died April 27, 2017 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, as a result of small arms fire while working to complete a raid on the headquarters of Abdul Hasib, the ISIS Khorasan’s emir. SGT Joshua Rodgers was killed in the same incident.

SGT Cameron Thomas was born in August 25, 1993 in Colorado Springs into a military family. He grew up around the world, calling Spain, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia and Georgia home throughout his childhood. He completed high school in Kettering, Ohio before enlisting in to the Army in February, 2012. He completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA, as an infantryman. He graduated from Basic Airborne Course before being assigned to the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program 1. In November 2012, after graduating from the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program 1, SGT Thomas was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger unit where he served as an Automatic Rifleman, Grenadier, and an Anti-Armor Specialist.

During his military career, SGT Thomas was deployed on three occasions, and earned several awards including Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Army Achievement Medal, among many others. Cameron exhibited the true strength and commitment of the Ranger unit, but his family says he always went the extra mile in everyday life as well.

“He was a hero by the example he set, by the helping hand he extended to friend and stranger alike, by the perseverance and dedication which with he worked to accomplish the goals he set, whether it was mastering a set of stairs on his skateboard or becoming a Ranger,” his family wrote in his obituary.

Although gone, he is not forgotten. “Cam, we will always love, miss, and honor you,” his family wrote. “You will forever be in our minds and hearts.”

SGT Cameron Thomas was 23 years old from Kettering, Ohio.

The original portrait was presented November 17th, 2019 to his parents, Heather and Andrew Thomas, and family in New York City, New York, during a special memorial event held by the Lead the Way Fund.
